What Insurance Risk Do Petting Zoos Have?

Any time the public interacts directly with live animals, a handful of predictable risk scenarios come up again and again.

Petting zoos and animal exhibits give visitors a hands-on experience that's hard to replicate anywhere else - but that same closeness is what creates most of the risk. Below are the exposures that come up most often when animal businesses talk to insurance agents.

Animal Bites

Even gentle, well-socialized animals can nip when startled, over-excited, or crowded by too many hands at once. Feeding stations, in particular, are a common source of bite incidents.

Animals Knocking People Over

Goats, ponies, and other larger animals can knock a visitor over simply by moving quickly toward food or another animal. Young children are especially vulnerable here.

Scratches

Claws, hooves, and beaks can scratch a visitor even during otherwise calm interactions - particularly with poultry, reptiles, and smaller mammals.

Slip and Fall

Hay, mud, water from cleaning stations, and general foot traffic around enclosures create slip-and-fall conditions that have nothing to do with the animals directly, but are just as common a source of claims.

Why It Matters

None of this means a petting zoo or animal exhibit can't operate safely - most do, every day. It's simply why many venues and municipalities ask for proof of insurance before booking an animal business, and why it's worth talking to a licensed agent about the coverage options available for your specific operation.
